SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Often, several members of the same family or those in a given building will complain of the same symptoms. Children are thought to be more susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning than adults. Some people may not suspect that CO poisoning is occurring until major symptoms appear. High risk groups include infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and anyone with a previous history of cardiac insufficiency or chronic obstructive lung disease.

MEDICAL CONSEQUENCE

Cerebral edema (swelling of the brain) is also a common result of severe carbon monoxide poisoning. This life threatening condition entails the destruction of brain cells by compressing them into themselves within the cranial compartment. Studies have shown that cerebral edema caused by CO poisoning can cause delayed neurological problems that involve the “higher” or cognitive functions, and may cause a Parkinsonian-like brain syndrome.

When will legislation effect me?

The industry and the Building Commission of Australia as well as various lobby groups and government bodies are still determining, when the legislation will come into effect. There are still a number of determinant factors that need to be considered, such as the number of Carbon monoxide alarms required in a household with gas appliances and where they need to be positioned accordingly.  A private members bill passed in March 2011 with a time-frame suggested early to middle of 2013 for this to be a BCA requirement, thus giving FPG time to engage with property managers and landlords about sustainable outcomes relating to CO Detectors.

What are the measures FPG will incorporate?

Once Carbon Monoxide alarms becomes mandatory for all home with gas appliances, the Fire Protection group will incorporate a 2-1 service which will enable us to provide a complete package both smoke and carbon monoxide installation and maintenance at the same time. This will give you the landlord the peace of mind that all your fire protection needs can be handled by the one company, in turn saving you time and money.
